Risk factors for prostate cancer

Age is the number one risk factor. The chances of developing a prostate disease increase as you get older. Prostate cancer is rare in men under 40, and 60% of prostate cancer cases are in men over 70.

Family history If a close relative developed prostate cancer before he was 60, you are four times more likely to develop it.

Ethnicity The highest rates of prostate cancer are recorded in Afro-Caribbean men.

Diets high in red meats and saturated fats are also considered a contributory factor.

40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK every year.
